Five Years of AV-TEST Certification

Nuki Achieves Gold Status for Security and Data Protection

Graz (Austria), April 3, 2025

A trusted certification and a new milestone: Just like its predecessors, Nuki’s latest generation of smart locks has once again earned the prestigious "Approved IoT Product" seal from the AV-TEST Institute shortly after launch. In addition, the independent IT security research organization has awarded Europe’s market leader in keyless access solutions the newly introduced IoT Gold Honor.

Security and data protection have been core principles at Nuki since the development of its first prototype. However, the Austrian company does not merely uphold its own high standards—it continuously subjects them to independent external verification. Since the release of its first-generation smart lock, every new electronic door lock has undergone rigorous testing in the AV-TEST Institute’s laboratories. The latest product lineup is no exception: the Nuki Smart Lock Go, Nuki Smart Lock Pro, and Nuki Smart Lock Ultra have all received the "Approved IoT Product" seal. After extensive evaluation, the independent institute concluded: "Overall, the brand-new generation of Nuki Smart Locks impressed us, just as their predecessors did in previous years. When it comes to security and data protection, Nuki products continue to excel."

The successful certification of Nuki’s fifth product generation now brings an additional honor. "We recognize manufacturers in the IoT sector for their long-standing commitment to AV-TEST certification. Companies participating in our evaluations for three and five consecutive years receive special recognition,” explains Eric Clausing, Head of IoT at AV-TEST. Nuki is now receiving the newly introduced Gold Honor for "5 Years of Certified IoT Security."

No User Account Required

What makes Nuki products stand out in terms of security and data protection? Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer Jürgen Pansy highlights a key principle: "The safest data is the data you don’t have to share." That’s why Nuki Smart Locks have been designed from the very first generation to function without requiring a mandatory user account. No user data is stored on Nuki’s servers—whether for local use via Bluetooth or remote access. In both cases, personal and security-related data remain solely on the user’s own devices, not on Nuki’s infrastructure.

The only exception is Nuki Web, a cloud-based service where data is temporarily stored on Nuki’s servers. Activating this service is optional, enabling users to conveniently manage their Nuki devices via PC or laptop. A Nuki Web account is also required for integration with certain cloud-based smart home systems, such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Even in these cases, Nuki upholds stringent security standards: all data is stored within the European Union and is subject to strict data protection regulations, ensuring maximum user privacy.

Encryption on Par with Online Banking

When it comes to security, Nuki relies on end-to-end encryption. This means that only the sender and recipient have access to a unique secret key. Additionally, a robust encryption algorithm—similar to those used in online banking—combined with the challenge-response method prevents eavesdropping and replay attacks on the electronic door lock.

Another key advantage: The Nuki app continuously checks for available updates and proactively notifies users. According to Jürgen Pansy, regular updates and security patches delivered via the app ensure that Nuki smart locks remain a modern and secure solution. The locks are designed to adapt to evolving security requirements, providing long-term protection against emerging cyber threats.

Valuable Insights for Continuous Improvement

At Nuki, successful certifications are not seen as a final milestone, but rather as part of an ongoing process of improvement. "We are pleased to have AV-TEST as a reliable institute that rigorously evaluates our products year after year in terms of IoT security and data protection. Their assessments provide us with valuable insights for further enhancements," concludes Jürgen Pansy.
