We’re already a few days into 2021, but Happy New Year all the same. We at Nuki have also got off to a good and, more importantly, GREEN start to the new year. We recently announced the launch of our latest product add-on, the Nuki Power Pack. This green alternative to conventional batteries was something people had been eagerly awaiting.
We were overwhelmed by the rush of demand and had to announce shortly after that our sustainable battery power pack for your Nuki Smart Lock had sold out in the Nuki Online Shop. You can find all the details in our latest update on the Power Pack.
This time we have some good news for your electronic door lock – our core product in the smart access solutions segment: Our Nuki Smart Locks are now officially climate-neutral.
Sustainability is a top priority at Nuki and is also deeply rooted in our corporate values. Although we have always made a consistent effort to achieve climate neutrality, certain emissions are inevitable. We compensate for this as part of an internationally recognised climate protection project in collaboration with ClimatePartner. As you can read in last year’s blog post, our Nuki headquarters in Graz, Austria has been climate-neutral since 2020.
Wherever possible, we seek to avoid and reduce emissions along our entire production and supply chain. For instance, our Nuki Smart Locks are manufactured in Europe, which means that transport routes are shorter. Nevertheless, in the production of our smart door locks, raw materials, packaging, logistics and disposal result in CO2 emissions. In collaboration with ClimatePartner, we recorded these emissions and determined our “product carbon footprint”.
“In addition to a climate-neutral company, I also consider climate-neutral products to be part of sustainability. The calculation of the product carbon footprint shows some areas for the breakdown of emissions. This highlights numerous possibilities for improving the products for additional climate-neutral alternatives and solutions for Nuki.”
Thomas Kothgasser, Head of the Nuki & ClimatePartner climate protection project
Our Nuki Smart Locks are climate-neutral because we offset all unavoidable CO2 emissions with a financial contribution to a climate protection project. Climate protection projects save CO2 – for example, through reforestation measures or the replacement of climate-damaging technologies with eco-friendly alternatives. So far we have already offset more than 611,000 kg of CO2, as you can read on the ClimatePartner website. Nuki continues to support a recognised and internationally certified climate protection project called “Solar Energy, Nanyang Danjiang, China”.
The independent label “climate-neutral” lets our customers track our climate neutrality and learn more about the climate protection project. This helps create the greatest possible transparency when it comes to the sustainability of our products. That’s why we deliberately refrained from sending Christmas gifts to our business and sales partners in 2020 and instead made our sustainable contribution to climate neutrality.
“Nuki shows in an exemplary way what holistically thought and lived sustainability is. The company consistently follows this path and continuously increases the scope of its climate protection measures – from the climate-neutral company headquarters to the products. We are pleased to be able to accompany and support this path with our expertise.”Jakob Sterlich, Head of ClimatePartner Austria
