After teasing it for over a year, Austrian smart lock maker Nuki has launched its Matter-over-Thread smart lock. The Nuki Smart Lock is the company’s fourth generation of its retrofit smart lock for European-style doors and is the first built from the ground up to work with the new smart home standard.
Nuki is a big name brand that’s become popular for its range of the best smart locks. It’s most well known for its collaborations with British company, Ultion, with the two having created the best smart lock on the market today, the 5-star Ultion Nuki Plus. Nuki is ever evolving with its technology, and its new fourth generation smart locks are more powerful and compatible than its predecessors.
With the fourth generation Smart Lock and Smart Lock Pro, no bridge or module is required, and integrating with Matter involves scanning a QR code. Both versions of the smart lock supports other smart home integrations, including Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit.
The rechargeable battery pack is a welcome, sensible, and more sustainable addition that will pay for itself over time. It can be charged in situ (which is further evidence of good design).
The Ultion Nuki smart lock range already had a lot going for it, such as a Brisant Secure 3 Star Plus cylinder and being rated at the Sold Secure Diamond standard.
And now the smart lock specialist can add the British Standards Institution (BSI) Kitemark for the Internet of Things to its armoury.
The award came after it passed a plethora of in-depth testing including protection against electromagnetic interference, cyber-attacks, and data hacking. Ultion Nuki locks endured rigorous BSI testing procedures, which even involved production line inspections to ensure a secure manufacturing process.
Over on The Ambient where I review a multitude of smart home gadgets, the Ultion Nuki was already a firm favorite… and now there’s even more reason to put your trust into the smart lock specialist.
Renowned for its high-security smart locks featuring the Brisant Secure 3 Star Plus cylinder and Sold Secure Diamond standard rating, Ultion Nuki has now added the prestigious British Standards Institution (BSI) Kitemark for the Internet of Things (IoT) to its list of accolades.
The BSI Kitemark was awarded following a series of exhaustive tests that assessed both the physical and digital security of Ultion Nuki locks.
These tests included resistance to electromagnetic interference, cyber-attacks, and data hacking.
The accompanying Nuki app also underwent comprehensive testing to ensure its resilience against hacking attempts. The app successfully resisted various exploits, maintaining its coding integrity and ensuring user security.

Mechanically, Ultion Nuki locks were required to operate for 100,000 cycles, equivalent to seven uses per day for 39 years, proving their exceptional durability.
Nick Dutton, CEO of Ultion, highlighted the importance of the BSI Kitemark, stating, “Achieving the BSI Kitemark for the Internet of Things was a significant investment, but it provides our customers with peace of mind, knowing their homes, belongings, and loved ones are protected. It validates that Ultion Nuki locks meet the highest standards for both digital and physical security.”
People fear that being able to unlock a door with a smartphone will mean being locked out when batteries die.
The collaboration between Ultion and Nuki dispels such concerns immediately by providing a manual override, allowing us to concentrate on the plus points: remote locking and unlocking, automatic unlocking as you approach, electronic guest keys and logs of comings and goings in its app.
