Smart lighting: an added plus for well-being and security

Smart Home 19.03.2020 | Marcus Schwarten

A connected home comes with many advantages, but above all, it ensures more security and convenience. Smart lighting covers both of these areas, as intelligent light control can offer increased security as well as a higher quality of life. Here is an overview of the options smart lighting offers.

An upgrade for every room

Although it’s not talked about much, lighting plays an important role in our quality of life. For many of us, life without light is basically inconceivable. Even in our own four walls, the right lighting atmosphere can provide a greater sense of well-being and increase productivity. Depending on the colour and brightness of the lighting, you can create a very specific ambience, from romantic, flickering candles to bright reading lamps for focused working.

Those of you who primarily use a switch to turn your lights on and off or dim them might ask how this works: with smart lamps, it’s simple and intuitive. You can easily adjust different settings and create a certain mood via an app, by voice command, or with a smart light switch. Networked lamps can create just the right atmosphere for a candlelight dinner with warm and muted lighting, ensure optimal visibility in the kitchen while you’re cooking, and relieve your eyes while you’re staring at the computer screen in your office.

Smart lighting is particularly beneficial when you need to get up in the middle of the night, since you can easily configure smart lamps to reduce brightness at night. This avoids the «hello and wake-up effect» when you switch on the light in the bathroom at night.

Practical little helpers

If you have smart lighting but still want to keep using your normal light switches too, you can make these smart as well. This will allow you to generate various lighting atmospheres at the push of a button – a welcome and familiar alternative to modern solutions that use apps and voice control.

Motion sensors are especially practical for hallways, staircases, and other transit rooms. These have been around for a while now, but generally only for use with individual lamps. When upgraded to a smart version, they can control entire rooms or storeys and make sure you’re never in the dark.

If you use smart lighting in combination with other Smart Home products, you can take full advantage of all the perks. For example, if your Nuki Smart Lock notifies your Smart Home that all residents have left after you lock the door, you can set all lights in the house to switch off automatically and activate the alarm system. As soon as your electronic lock from Nuki unlocks the door again, your home will welcome you with your personal choice of feel-good lighting.

Added value for a secure home

Aside from the added convenience, lighting also plays a crucial role in securing your own four walls. The more intense the light shines in a property, the less interesting it becomes for burglars. Smart lighting can help scare off intruders in a number of ways.

On the one hand, you can automatically control outdoor lighting in a Smart Home. This means that your home is never unlit at dusk or when it’s already dark outside. On the other hand, interior smart lighting can simulate your presence, even when you’re not home, by turning the light on and off in different rooms (ideally in a random manner). Since burglars often choose buildings in which it’s obvious that nobody’s home, this provides an additional deterrent.
