Nuki brings the Convenience and Security of Contactless Payments to Your Front Door

Graz (Austria), March 24, 2026

From Tap to Pay to Tap to Unlock: Nuki transfers established convenience and trusted security from public spaces to the front door. What has long been part of everyday life when paying bills is now becoming reality when entering your own home with the new Keypad 2 NFC. The Austrian smart access pioneer is launching the world’s first Aliro-certified keypad for residential electronic door locks.

The weekly grocery shop at the supermarket, a 24-hour subway ticket, a card payment at the cinema box office, or a cold drink at a football stadium: all of these can be paid for conveniently, securely, and in seconds with a single tap. In each of these situations, it is Near Field Communication (NFC) that enables contactless payment via smartphone or smartwatch. With the new Keypad 2 NFC, Nuki now brings the advantages of this secure short-range wireless standard for data exchange over just a few centimeters to the front door. “Access has never been smarter, more secure, or faster. With the Keypad 2 NFC, we transfer the strengths of Tap to Pay from public spaces directly to the front door. Our users experience the same convenience and security they already trust when making contactless payments in many everyday situations,” says Martin Pansy, Co-founder and CEO of Nuki. Since Smart Lock and Keypad are standalone products at Nuki, the new feature can be easily retrofitted: the NFC Keypad makes existing Matter-enabled electronic door locks from Nuki ready for Tap to Unlock in no time.

Contactless Unlocking for All Users
But how does Tap to Unlock work in practice? Simply hold your mobile device up to the Keypad 2 NFC – there is no need to open the Nuki App. To use Apple home key1 or Samsung Digital Home Key in a digital wallet, a Matter-enabled Nuki Smart Lock, a Matter hub from the respective provider, and a compatible mobile device are required. “One of Nuki’s core principles is to make new features accessible to all users, regardless of the manufacturer,” emphasizes Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer Jürgen Pansy. That is why the Nuki App mode expands the unlocking options: it enables Tap to Unlock completely independent of Matter or wallet apps. This mode is available to all users with a  fourth- or fifth-generation Nuki Smart Lock and an NFC-enabled smartphone – no additional hub required.

Secure, Fast and Built to Last
With the Keypad 2 NFC, a home can now be accessed in five different ways: via Apple home key, Samsung Digital Home Key, Tap to Unlock in Nuki App mode, fingerprint, or a personalized access code. The new Keypad can store up to 20 fingerprints, 35 Tap-to-Unlock keys, and 200 access codes. While the range of access options continues to grow, Nuki’s high standards for data security, simplicity, and durability remain unchanged.  Every single entry to your home – whether by tap, fingerprint, or access code – is protected by end-to-end encryption. The Austrian company relies on the same proven encryption standards used in payment systems. As with all Nuki products, the new Keypad upholds the highest level of data security: all Nuki access data is stored locally, while cloud usage remains optional. Installation is as simple as ever: mounting is completed in minutes using adhesive strips or screws – entirely without complex wiring. The Nuki Keypad 2 NFC is designed for durability: manufactured in Europe, it is reliably protected against dust and moisture in accordance with the international IP54 standard. The power supply is built to last as well. In the Nuki setup, the Keypad and Smart Lock are not permanently connected, making the system particularly energy-efficient and ensuring operation for at least twelve months.

Pioneering Open Standards in Smart Access
Matter has been ensuring seamless integration of smart home devices across manufacturers for years, enabling simple setup and smooth communication within connected homes. The smart home standard was developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), whose members include major industry players such as Apple, Samsung, and Google. Now, Matter has been expanded with a dedicated standard for smart access: With Aliro, smart locks communicate securely and seamlessly with smartphones and wearables. Specification 1.0 was published at the end of February; a mere four weeks later, Nuki is already introducing the Keypad 2 NFC: the world’s first Aliro-certified keypad for electronic door locks in the private residential sector. “Nuki made a strong statement in the industry with the launch of the world’s first electronic door lock with native Matter support. Bringing Aliro to our customers’ doors is the logical next step for us. As a pioneer in smart access, supporting open standards is not just an option – it is a core belief. Users deserve seamless interoperability and future-proof technology, regardless of which ecosystem they choose,” concludes Jürgen Pansy.

The Nuki Keypad 2 NFC is available immediately at a retail price of 179 Euro in the Nuki Online Shop and on Amazon. Information about the upgrade program for existing customers can be found here.
