What do women really want from smart devices? – Ways to make life easier and more secure

“Women and technology don’t mix.” There, we said it – and now we feel a bit awkward, because who actually says that anyway? Probably not women… However, this cliché has been around for so long that many women are starting to believe it themselves. As a result, technical gadgets have long been marketed as “boys’ toys”. Women are “allowed” to use these gadgets once men have explained how they work. It is high time for manufacturers to take a more inclusive and, more importantly, modern view of their target group.

Everyday smart aids are here for everyone

The greater the advances technology makes, the more of a mystery it becomes to all those who claim that they “don’t understand these things”. That said, all Smart Home technologies, particularly smart devices, are actually genuinely helpful in people’s everyday lives – and that applies to everybody.

In a Smart Home, the standard household appliances such as washing machines, lamps, heaters, blinds, etc. are networked. The ability to control these devices online saves users from having to perform many small tasks throughout the day. Thanks to the Smart Home, these tasks can be automated. For instance, you can program the heating to reduce the temperature at a certain time of day, or automatically switch on lamps and music as soon as the door is opened via the Smart Lock. This can be incredibly useful and is not that difficult to set up. You can find an introduction to the topic here.

How secure are Smart Home devices?

While men often get fired up about the many exciting features of a Smart Home gadget, women tend to focus first and foremost on the issue of security, particularly where the Smart Home is concerned. After all, it involves technology that affects the running of one’s own home. Certifications from renowned test institutes build trust, as it is generally beyond users to check complex systems, such as Smart Home devices, for potential security flaws. This is a good reason for manufacturers to be transparent when communicating the security certifications for their products. The Nuki Smart Lock, for instance, is tested regularly by independent security experts, with the test results being published accordingly.

Security is of particular relevance to Smart Lock technology. Being able to easily lock your own front door via your smartphone, even remotely, is very convenient – particularly when you go out to work and have a family. Who wouldn’t want to always be certain that the children have arrived home safely?

If you are still unsure, you should seek further information. Information is the only means to overcome doubt. Many people avoid asking detailed questions about the security of a Smart Home device out of fear of not being able to understand the explanation. But almost any process can be explained in easily understood terms, however technical it may be. We at Nuki have collected the most important questions people ask around the theme of “How secure are Smart Locks?” and answered them for you in a way that is easy to understand.
