AV-TEST: IoT Gold Award for the New Nuki Product Generation

The new product lineup was recently presented to the public. Just like all previous generations, the three new Nuki Smart Locks have received the "Approved IoT Product" seal from the independent AV-TEST Institute. However, this time, Nuki has been given a special award: For the first time, AV-TEST is awarding the IoT Gold Honor for "5 Years Certified IoT Security."

Focus on Security and Data Protection

From the very beginning, security and data protection have been top priorities. In addition to maintaining high internal standards, these criteria are regularly reviewed by independent institutions. Each new Smart Lock has undergone AV-TEST's strict evaluations—including the latest models of the fifth product generation: The Nuki Smart Lock Go, Nuki Smart Lock Pro, and Nuki Smart Lock Ultra have already been certified as "Approved IoT Products." After extensive testing, AV-TEST stated: "Overall, the brand-new generation of Nuki Smart Locks has impressed us just as much as its predecessors in previous years. In terms of security and data protection, Nuki products remain in excellent shape!"

The certification of the fifth Smart Lock generation comes with a special award that is being granted for the first time: "We honor long-standing IoT manufacturers that have been certified by AV-TEST. Companies that have participated in certifications over a period of three or five years are awarded a certificate," explains Eric Clausing, Head of IoT at AV-TEST. Nuki has now received this new Gold Honor for "5 Years Certified IoT Security."

No User Account Required

But what makes Nuki products stand out in terms of security and data protection? Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer Jürgen Pansy explains:"The safest data, in our opinion, is the data you don’t have to share at all." That’s why Nuki Smart Locks have been designed from the start to function without requiring a user account.

Regarding data storage, all personal and security-related data is stored only locally on the end devices, not on Nuki’s servers. This applies to both Bluetooth use and remote access. The only exception is Nuki Web, which allows users to manage their Nuki devices via computer. In this case, data is temporarily stored on Nuki’s servers, but activation is entirely optional. Users integrating their Nuki Smart Lock into a cloud-based smart home system (such as Google Home or Amazon Alexa) will typically need a Nuki Web account.

Encryption Like Online Banking

When it comes to security, Nuki relies on end-to-end encryption. A secret key, known only to the sender and recipient, ensures secure communication. Strong encryption algorithms, similar to those used in online banking, provide additional protection. The challenge-response method prevents unauthorized interception, copying, and replaying of lock commands to the electronic door lock.

Security Through Nuki App Updates

The Nuki app continuously checks for updates and proactively notifies users. Regular updates and app-based security improvements ensure that Nuki’s smart locks remain a modern and secure solution. All Nuki Smart Locks are continuously adapted to meet new security requirements, offering reliable protection.

Continuous Improvements

Jürgen Pansy concludes: "We are pleased to have AV-TEST as a reliable institute that challenges our products in terms of IoT security and data protection year after year. Their feedback provides us with valuable insights for further improvements."
